There are several factors to consider when you want to determine how often you should change your iPhone's battery. What pushes you to change the battery? Understanding your battery health is critical in knowing when to change it. Many factors influence the decision to change the battery, like aging.

iPhone batteries change their efficiency when they start aging. It makes the users charge them more often, and they don't keep the power for long, and in some cases, they shut down unexpectedly. Apple faced several legal battles concerning battery replacements when they banned third parties from offering the service.

The batteries are mainly made from Lithium polymer, which starts degrading after 50 charging cycles. It becomes unstable at this stage, causing the users numerous problems. Other things that can degrade the battery include bad charging habits, high temperatures, deep discharging, e.t.c.

When you notice most of these issues, it's the right time to change the battery. Some of the things you can also do to confirm if you need a replacement include:

Check the battery health

There are several steps to follow when checking battery health. The best percentage for battery health is 80%. When you charge your phone, and it can't keep the charge for the whole day to satisfy your needs, you should start organizing a new battery.

In scenarios where the percentage drops to 40 or 50%, you will face many issues and the phone won't keep the power for long. In cases where it drops below 40%, it's worse, and you will have to change the battery.

To check the battery health, you follow the steps below:

  • Access your settings on your phone and navigate to the battery.
  • Under the battery, check battery health, and you will get an overview of Maximum capacity and Peak Performance Capability.

Maximum capacity shows you how much the battery can hold now compared to when it was new. If it is very low, you must prepare to buy another one.

Peak performance capability is important when it says that our battery is currently supporting normal peak performance, everything is ok, but in some scenarios, you get messages like This iPhone has experienced an unexpected shutdown because the battery was unable to deliver the necessary peak power. Performance management has been applied to help prevent this from happening again." which shows that the power within the battery is not good and you will face issues. You have to get another battery.

When you get messages like Performance management applied, it shows that the iPhone experienced several shutdowns. You can eliminate this by clicking the Disable button at the end of the notice.

Other notifications you can receive to show battery issues include Performance management applied, Battery health unknown, e.t.c. It's good to be observant and keep checking how your battery behaves.

Using other applications, you can know the charging life cycle when it is above 500. You can use apps like CoconutBattery 3 to get the total number of cycle counts after pulling enough data from the iPhone.

Experts also warn that keeping the battery charged empty or full can factor in when to replace the battery. Try and keep the charge at 60% to keep everything well and improve the battery lifespan.

Some of the battery changes come due to chemical changes. When it ages, the chemicals reduce, impacting how long it can store power. There are no changes you can perform at this stage to revert the process, and it happens on all the Lithium batteries. You must learn to take care of your battery to increase its lifespan before it's too late.
