Testing And Diagnosing Ram Problems Of Your Computer

Testing And Diagnosing Ram Problems Of Your Computer

Have you realized issues with your computer when using it? It may be freezing and becoming unstable. There is a high chance that the computer's RAM has a problem. RAM plays a vital role in the operation of the computer. The RAM acts as the short-term memory on your computer, and any problems affect the whole functionality.

Major Signs that Show that Your RAM is Developing Problems

Currently, RAM failure is among the most common issues in a computer. There are several symptoms to indicate that your computer's RAM is developing problems, such as;

1. Slow computer performance.

Once your RAM starts developing problems, you will notice slowed computer performance. However, diminishing computer performance can be caused by other things; thus, you need to be sure that the RAM is the main problem. Restart your computer without firing up the applications. If similar issues occur before running any application, it is time to get another RAM.

2. When your video card declines loading.

After turning your computer on, a loud beep is produced. This shows that the video and media hardware is on the right track and has been corrected. Failure to hear the sound might indicate that the RAM is malfunctioning. When turning your MacBook, pay attention. If it beeps thrice, then your RAM has some errors.

3. Data files are getting corrupted.

Sometimes, you realize that the data you use most often are not opening and are corrupted. It is essential to back up your data from time to time. When your files are corrupted, it indicates that your RAM has some issues. If files are getting corrupted frequently and a large amount of data is corrupted, it is time to check on your RAM.

A problematic RAM causes issues on the computer's hard drive, and if you fail to attend to the issue on time, your pc might decline to boot.

4. When the computer is randomly crashing.

When using your computer, it might randomly crash without giving any notice. This only sometimes means that the RAM has a problem. For instance, you might observe a blue screen when opening a particular application.

5. Wrong RAM system display.

You can easily check the amount of RAM that your Windows and MAC device have. In addition, you can see the amount of RAM to install on your computer. Right-click on the start menu on the windows system and tap 'about .'You will receive an overview of the computer's primary statistics, such as the RAM amount installed. If your computer shows the wrong amount, then your RAM is faulty.

On MacBook devices, go to apple, then click 'About the Mac' and ensure to select the overview tab. Afterward, you will receive some computer statistics such as RAM amount.

If you need to be made aware of the amount of RAM your device should have, search for it online using the computer's product number.

RAM testing tools.

There are two common RAM testing tools, namely MemTest86 and Windows Memory Diagnostic. The MemTest86 tool is downloaded to the computer while the Windows Memory Diagnostic is on your computer. The tools perform via writing information on every sector of the RAM and display them on the screen.

When testing the RAM, it is best to reboot the machine in a bootable system. It ensures that the tool can access the RAM. Let us have a broad look at the RAM testing tools.

1. Run windows memory diagnostic.

Using a windows device, you will find an in-built RAM testing tool. It is available in the current versions of Windows 7, 10, and 11.

To start the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool, go to the start menu, type 'Windows Memory Diagnostic' the tap 'Enter.'

Another shorter method is tapping Windows key +R and key in "mdsched.exe" on the dialog box that pops up, then tap "enter."

To carry out the test, you are required to reboot your pc. As the test runs, you cannot use the computer. To continue the process, save your work and tap "Restart now and check for problems ."Within a few seconds, the computer restarts.

After restarting, the Windows Memory Diagnostics tool pops up on the screen. Leave the computer to perform the test for some minutes. As the process continues, you can see a bar showing progress, and a "status" message will report if issues are detected when testing the computer.

You do not have to sit and watch the test. Start the process and leave your machine for several minutes to complete the test.

After the test, your computer will reboot and go to the windows desktop. Log in to check the results. In some cases, the results may fail to appear. If they fail, right-click the start button. Tap "event viewer ." If your computer uses Windows 7, tap Windows key+ R, then key in "eventvwr. MSC" on the run dialog and tap "enter."

Go to the Windows logs, then systems. A large number of events will appear. Tap "Find" on the right pane.

Afterward, type “MemoryDiagnostic" on the find box and tap "Find next ."Your results and more details regarding your RAM will be displayed on the bottom part of Windows.

2. Boot and run MemTest86.

The MemTest86 is a powerful RAM testing tool downloaded to your computer. The software carries out a wide range of tests and can diagnose tests that Windows tests will never find. The tool has the latest paid version to offer enhanced features. However, the free version can carry out the activities you want.

There is also the MemTest86+ that can serve as an option, but the MemTest86 has been used by more people and delivered results. When using MemTest86, you are provided with a USB image to transfer to a USB drive.

Tip: When copying the MemTest86 image to a USB drive, it gets rid of all data. Thus, ensure to back up important data before carrying out the activity.

Create a bootable media and restart your computer. Afterward, inform it to boot from the USB drive to where you transferred the test tool.

The tool boots immediately and starts scanning your memory and carrying out tests simultaneously until you decide to stop it. It allows you to test memory behavior over a long period. All information regarding errors is displayed on the screen. After completing the process, tap "Esc" to exit the action. Then restart your pc.

What if the test finds errors in your RAM?

You can see whether the RAM has a problem when the results are out. One of the RAM sticks has a problem and needs to be checked. If the computer has a warranty, inform the manufacturer and wait for them to advise you on the steps to take.

Other options are using the spare RAM in your house. Swap the current faulty RAM with the out RAM and observe if your computer can operate with a different RAM. Check if your computer's RAM has multi-sticks. If so, remove one to see if it will operate. This method can help you determine which RAM component is causing problems,

If you build the PC or install the RAM, the RAM and the motherboard are incompatible. You are required to adjust the RAM speed to ensure that it works efficiently.

Tips for ensuring that your RAM does not have problems in the future

When your RAM experiences problems, it affects the whole PC. It becomes difficult to function with faulty RAM. Once you correct the issues, follow these steps to prevent future occurrences.

1. Make sure that the RAM runs under the right clocks of the system

You can see the memory speed and timing labeled on the packaging when getting your computer. Therefore ensure that the RAM runs as per the indicated speed. In some cases, the RAM can be set to operate faster than how it should, which causes errors. Check if the XMP setting is right on your BIOS.

If it does not help, you can underclock the computer's memory. This means that it will operate slower than normal speed. Nevertheless, this step is not common because if the RAM is experiencing problems, then there are chances it will only stop once it is fixed.

2. Be keen on the platforms you are using on your computer

Not all platforms work well with the computer's memory. This occurs when you are running high-memory platforms. Always check if the motherboard and CPU can support the frequency. In the end, your memory will seem broken, while the RAM cannot handle the high frequencies.

Conclusion

RAM is an essential component of the computer in terms of operation. You might notice that your computer is becoming slow, showing a blueprint on the screen and crashing when using.

These are signs that the RAM has a problem and needs fixing before the computer worsens. There are two main steps to test RAM problems on your computer, namely the Windows Memory Diagnostic and the MemTest68.
